DIY Hand Sanitizer

July 20, 2018

Since the cold and flu season is approaching, I’m reminded of how important it is to keep our hands clean. I personally love this homemade anti bacterial hand sanitizer that I can carry around everywhere, where washing hands with soap and water isn’t always possible. In those situations, a good hand sanitizer is the best alternative!

Those little bottles of hand sanitizer at the grocery store checkout stand are convenient. They’re pretty small and don’t last very long. Before you know it, you’re throwing away the little plastic bottle and buying another one! So I wanted to come up with a homemade hand sanitizer that I could make and use to refill one small bottle as needed, and reduce that unnecessary waste. And not only does this homemade version reduce waste, it also allows to control the ingredients that go into it.

So, here’s how you can make it at home.

  • Distilled or filtered water
  • 2 Tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 60 drops Shield essential oil blend*

*Note: If you don’t have the Shield blend, you can substitute the following amounts of individual essential oils:

  • 10 drops each of rosemary, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and clove bud essential oils
  • 20 drops of lemon essential oil

Start with a clean hand sanitizer bottle or liquid soap bottle.

Add the water, aloe vera gel, and the essential oils to the bottle. Replace the lid on the bottle and shake well. And to use it, squeeze a small amount of the sanitizer onto your hands and rub them together. Repeat as needed.

Try this out so whenever you’re out you don’t have to go search for water and soap everywhere.

Note: If you’ve been reading recent reports about how unhealthy the use of hand sanitizers can be, keep in mind that the danger exists in the chemicals used in commercial sanitizers. This hand sanitizer recipe uses NONE of those harmful chemicals, and relies on pure essential oils to kill germs.

Also, sometimes it’s good to allow our bodies to encounter germs and strengthen our immune systems, but sometimes it’s nice to have a hand sanitizer available for emergencies. This gentle homemade formula is one of the best alternatives to commercial hand sanitizers.
